Unguentum Neomycini a drug for local treatment of purulent skin diseases
Description
A preparation in the form of an ointment for use in purulent skin diseases.
Action
Unguentum Neomycini is an ointment for use on the skin. This medicine contains the antibiotic neomycin, which belongs to aminoglycoside antibiotics.
Neomycin has a bactericidal effect on staphylococci and many Gram-negative bacteria, including Escherichia coli, Haemophilus influenza and bacteria of the genera Klebsiella, Proteus, Pseudomonas, Salmonella and Shigella, as well as acid-fast bacilli, including streptomycin-resistant strains of Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Neomycin does not work on Pseudomonas aeruginosa bacteria and bacteria of the genus Streptococcus and does not work on fungi, yeasts and viruses.
Indications
Preparation in the form of an ointment for use in purulent skin diseases, especially those caused by staphylococci (e.g. furunculosis, impetigo), purulent complications of allergic skin diseases, infected minor burns and frostbite.
Contraindications
When not to use Unguentum Neomycini:
– if the patient is allergic to neomycin or any of the other ingredients of this medicine
– during pregnancy and breastfeeding;
– in children under 12 years of age;
– if the patient has been diagnosed with hearing loss;
– on large areas of damaged skin, oozing lesions and varicose or long-term ulcers, due to the risk of damaging hearing or kidneys;
– simultaneously with drugs that are toxic to the hearing organ, kidneys or nervous system;
– in the elderly;
– in renal disorders;
– in hearing or balance disorders.
Warnings and precautions
Before using Unguentum Neomycini, talk to your doctor or pharmacist.
– Do not use the medicine for a long time, as it causes bacterial resistance to increase and can also cause fungal superinfection.
– The medicine applied topically, especially on open wounds and for a long time, may be ototoxic (damage to hearing and balance) and nephrotoxic (cause kidney damage).
Use in children
Do not use in children under 12 years of age.
Pregnancy
If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, you should consult your doctor or pharmacist before using this medicine. The use of Unguentum Neomycini in pregnant and breast-feeding women is contraindicated.
Dosage
Always use this medicine exactly as described in the package leaflet or as directed by your doctor or pharmacist. If you are not sure, ask your doctor or pharmacist.
Before using the medicine, pierce the membrane of the tube with the reverse side of the cap. In the case of a sachet, tear the packaging; apply the ointment immediately after opening the sachet.
Unless your doctor recommends otherwise, cover the affected areas with a thin layer of ointment 2 to 4 times a day. Do not use for longer than 7 days.
Wash your hands after using the medicine.
Side effects
Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everyone will experience them.
Skin reactions and irritations, allergic changes, redness, erythema, swelling, itching, toxic reactions and eczematous changes may occur.
Composition
– The active substance of the medicine is neomycin sulfate.
1 g of the ointment contains 5 mg of neomycin sulfate.
– Other ingredients are: white petrolatum, liquid paraffin.
