“Postinor is an emergency contraceptive that can be used within 72 hours (3 days) after unprotected sex or if a regular method of contraception fails.
Postinor contains as an active ingredient a synthetic hormone-like substance called levonorgestrel.
Prevents 84% of expected pregnancies when used within 72 hours of unprotected sex. It does not prevent pregnancy in all cases and is more effective if used as soon as possible after unprotected sex. It is better to take it within 12 hours than to wait until the third day.
Postinor probably works as follows:
prevents the release of an egg from the ovary;
prevents sperm from fertilizing an egg that may have already been released.
Postinor can only prevent pregnancy if you take it within 72 hours of unprotected sex. This will not work if you are already pregnant. If you have unprotected sex again after taking Postinor, the drug will not prevent pregnancy.
Postinor is not intended for use before the first menstrual period (first menstruation).
A previous ectopic pregnancy or previous inflammation of the fallopian tubes increases the risk of another ectopic pregnancy. All women should use emergency contraception as soon as possible after unprotected sex. There is evidence that Postinor may be less effective if you are overweight or have a higher body mass index (BMI), but the evidence is limited and inconclusive. Therefore, Postinor remains suitable for all women, regardless of their body weight or BMI.
We encourage you to discuss concerns about using emergency contraception with your doctor.
How often can you take Postinor?
Use Postinor only in emergency situations and not as a regular method of contraception.
If you use Postinor more than once during your menstrual cycle, it is less reliable and more likely to disrupt your menstrual cycle (menstruation).
Postinor does not work the same way as traditional methods of contraception. Your doctor, nurse, or Planned Parenthood clinic staff can give you information about long-term contraceptive methods that are much more effective at preventing pregnancy.
Pregnancy, breastfeeding and fertility
If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, think you may be pregnant, or are planning to have a baby, talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking this medicine.
Pregnancy
Do not take this medicine if you are already pregnant.
Mode of application:
Take both tablets at the same time as soon as possible, preferably within 12 hours but no later than 72 hours (3 days) after unprotected sex. Feel free to take the pill. The sooner you take the pill after unprotected sex, the more effective it will be. It can only protect you from pregnancy if you take it within 72 hours of unprotected sex.
You can take Postinor at any time during your menstrual cycle as long as you are no longer pregnant or think you are unable to become pregnant. Do not chew the tablets, but swallow them whole and wash them down with water.
If you are already using a regular method of contraception, such as birth control pills, you can continue to take them at your usual times.
If, after taking Postinor, you have unprotected sex again (even if you have it during the same menstrual cycle), the pills will not have a contraceptive effect and there is a risk of another pregnancy.
