“Directions
Salicylic acid is an organic acid derived from salicin, used for the treatment of acne and skin inflammation, impure skin with dilated pores, all those conditions linked to flaking or skin hyperkeratosis, such as dry dandruff, psoriasis and calluses. Salicic acid is the main exponent of beta hydroxy acids (BHA), which are exfoliating and keratolic agents with an action different from that of alpha-hydroxy acids used in anti-aging treatments. In chemistry, salicylic acid is called 2-hydroxybenzoic acid and is identified by the brute formula C7H6O3. The molecule derives from the enzymatic hydrolysis of salicin, a salicoside glucoside extracted from willow (Salix alba). Applied to the skin, salicylic acid acts as an effective keratolytic: the molecule is able to selectively break the keratin protein chain, abundantly present in corneocytes. Having no effect on other proteins, salicylic acid is able to exfoliate and destroy only the cells of the stratum corneum, thus carrying out a superficial peeling. Unlike beta-hydroxy acids, having a larger and lipophilic molecule, it penetrates the pores, freeing the blackhead from its sebaceous content and also acts as an anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and soothing agent. Its main cosmetic properties are:
exfoliating action for smoother and brighter skin
anti-inflammatory and antibacterial action in case of acne (also rosacea), impure skin, blackheads and enlarged pores
anti-dandruff action on the scalp
keratolic action on corns, calluses and hyperkeratosis
Salicylic acid also has a good lightening and anti-wrinkle action as by decreasing the cohesion forces of the corneocytes, it promotes the desquamation of hyperpigmented keratinocytes and the first superficial layer of the epidermis while encouraging cell renewal. The result is that the “”new”” keratinocytes, being less rich in melanic pigment, give the skin a uniform, smooth, firm and luminous appearance. In formulations, salicylic acid improves the performance of the preservative system. At 0.5% and in an acidic environment it is considered a real preservative.
Method of use and dosage
Recommended percentage of use: from 0.5 to 2% of the preparation. Salicylic acid is slightly soluble in water (2 g/L) and oil but very soluble in alcohol and glycols. Another way to solubilize it is to salify it with a base (for example sodium bicarbonate, arginine or sodium hydroxide) in order to make it soluble. Solubility in water increases as the pH of the preparation increases. Some substances such as trimethylglycine improve its solubility. Salicic acid at pH 4 or lower acts as an exfoliant at eudermic pH maintaining anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and soothing properties.”
