What Causes Yellow Eyes

There are several possible causes of yellow eyes, and it is important to consider these to determine if you should see a doctor. Here are the main possible causes of yellow eyes:
1. Jaundice: This is the most common cause of yellow in the whites of the eyes. Jaundice is caused by a buildup of bilirubin (a pigment formed when red blood cells break down) in the blood. It can be due to liver disease (hepatitis, cirrhosis), bile duct disease, or liver disease, as well as anemia.
2. Liver disease:
o Hepatitis: Inflammation of the liver, which can be caused by viruses, alcohol, toxins, or other factors.
o Cirrhosis: A chronic liver disease in which normal tissue is replaced by scar tissue.
o Gallstones: Gallstones can block the bile ducts and cause jaundice.
3. Biliary tract disorders:
o Acute cholecystitis: Inflammation of the gallbladder, which can cause jaundice.
o Cholangitis: Inflammation of the bile ducts, which can also cause jaundice.
4. Anemia: Certain types of anemia can cause the destruction of red blood cells, leading to yellowing of the skin and eyes.
5. Gilbert’s syndrome: A benign liver disorder in which there is a slight increase in the level of bilirubin in the blood.
6. Dehydration or swelling: Sometimes a yellow tint can occur due to changes in the skin and eyes related to dehydration or swelling.

If you notice that you have a yellow tint to your eyes, it is important to see a doctor for diagnosis and proper treatment. This is especially important if you are also experiencing other symptoms, such as abdominal pain, changes in the color of your urine or stool, or general weakness.
